Headshot Background Options

There are a few things to consider when choosing a background for someone's headshot. What is the skin and hair color? What is their clothing? What feeling do they want to project – Snuggly Teddy Bear or Chuck Norris? Do I need to match a style or color that their company is currently using?

During longer sessions, there’s more time to experiment with different options, but for larger group sessions (20 people and up) we usually have to make a decision and stick with it to keep to a schedule.

Have Something... Anything!

You gotta have a photograph of some sort in your profile, even if it's from your trip to Cancun and there's an iguana on your shoulder. Your profile is 14 times more likely to be viewed when there’s a profile photo. That’s huge.

I use Paypal to collect deposits for my studio headshot sessions. It's very convenient, and since my local post office seems to lose about half of my mail, checks are not really an option.

If you don't have a Paypal account, don't worry, you can still use the service to send your deposit using your credit or debit card, as the photos here illustrate. I will send you an email via Paypal requesting the deposit. You can see a screenshot of that email above.

For headshots, an out-of-focus foreground (i.e the subject) is a bad idea, but blurry backgrounds look cool! So I was excited when a DC area client wanted just that.

Fortunately the space they chose for the shoot, a co-work space called DC Workspaces, was perfect for the job. They had a glass-walled conference room with a large, bright open space behind that acted as the perfect stage. And by moving just a few inches to one side or the other between shoots, I was able to give each subject a slightly different backdrop.
